  • FREQ a file ???

    Hi

    This is only the second time I've run a BBS and the first time was an
    internal company one back in the early 90s (mostly for copying files and drivers around the company plus private discussion boards for IT dept)

    So most of what I've learnt has been by dredging through whatever
    documentation I could find at the time. Today the documentation side of
    things seems to be much more easily found (I never used an expensive
    commercial bbs back in the day).

    But one thing I keep on seeing is the use of FREQ'ing a file. I've looked around docs and searched online but am unable to find any reference to how to FREQ a file - it's as if it is some secret handshake given to only the secret society members once they reach a certain grade.

    Could anybody explain the FREQ command to me and how to use it?

    And if it is so secret feel free to reply by private netmail or even email
    with PGP (lol)

    It's no secret. Back in the dial-up (FD, BinkleyTerm and others) days it was easy to setup your node to honour file requests and it was also easy to get your mailer to send a file request and when you did that you'd poll the node that had the file you wanted and if it was found the nodes mailer would send it to you and you would find that file in your inbound.

    It's not always possible to setup or request files in today's binkp world as it was back then but it is still possible. My node supports file requests so any node who wants files from here can request them from here.

    Synchronet supports file requests if that has been setup and can also send file requests to other nodes. Mystic doesn't send or honour requests. I think it is on g00r00's todo list but it hasn't happened yet.
