• TELNET menu command

From paulie420@21:2/150 to All on Sunday, November 15, 2020 15:14:43
I'm on Mystic a47, so I read in the a46 whatsnew.txt that there is now an option '/ESC' that can be added to telnet, rlogin or SSH connections to allow the Ctrl-] function to actually work to exit out of a telnet...

I run the StarWars ASCII Movie as a TELNET out; so I have a menu command:

IR, with DATA:'/addr=the.address' ... I changed that to '/addr=the.address /ESC' but with the /ESC added, it won't even try the telnet out. It just quickly fails - well I wouldn't even say fails, because nothing happens. It's just like the user pressed enter. No output from Mystic at all.

The only other bit of info that might be needed is that this TELNET IR command is off of an InputNY question.

'Do you want to watch this 20 min ASCIIvideo?' No - exit to doors menu, Yes - IR command.

Any ideas why the /ESC doesn't work on a47??? It just came out on a46, so...

I'm not running a pre-ahpha at this time but I did check the whatsnew.txt and can see this is *not* in A46 but rather has been added as development
    continues with A47

+ Because allowing a CTRL+] escape character may interfere with transfers
during a bridged connection (ie, a file may have the escape character in
it which could end the session when it attempts to send over the bridge),
all outbound telnet, rlogin, and SSH connections will require the /ESC
option in the command data for the escape sequence to be active.

I have not played with this command but checking the wiki reveals it needs /addr /user and /pass options to be included for it to work. Are you using
    them all?

I'm on a47... I read that snippet, too, which is why I tried it... It would be helpful, as the StarWars ASCIImovie is 20 minutes long and the ability for a user to exit would be... needed. :P

One thing I HAVEN'T done it update the a47 to like... the most current build. I didn't understand, when upgrading to a47, that the pre-alpha was... lol; a pre-alpha. That needs to be updated as g00r00 continues to develop and release new pa's.

So, maybe the /ESC part isn't in my version of a47?? Or...

I am not. That StarWars telnet link doesn't require user or password... possibly I could set them to anonymous; regardless your post has given me a COUPLE things to investigate.

Do you agree that; maybe I need the newest build of a47? And... since I'm not calling /user or /pass that maybe thats why the /ESC part isn't active?

Those are my two current thoughts; and while I *did* already see the snippet about /ESC, I didn't doublebown and check the wiki so.... thanks for doing my work for me. LOL...

it could be either option. You could update and try again but reading the
notes on that menu command it looks like you must pass all those switches for it to work irrespective of the ESC one.

g00r00 has said that /ESC should work without /pass /user - but if I get a better idea I'll post back. Wonder if its an issue because I'm coming off a YNInput; maybe we'll see, and I will also try to update a47 like you suggested... I'm sure it'll come around. :P

The user and password are not required, just the /addr=, I use it on my
board. Have sort of a favorite BBS menu, works fine.

Just to update any other readers, we were talking about adding /ESC on the end of a telnet, ssh, rlogin instance - new feature to make sure Ctrl-] works to exit out of said instance. g00r00 says its an issue that he'll fix in the build of mystic a47 after the 11-17 one.

so the /ESC feature will be fixed soon.
