    Aaaaaand that is why you use Stable for actual work, and Current for playing or development.

    If you are stressed, think of the people who use rolling releases. That is the usual state of being for them :-)

    If you want to follow Stable with slackpkg, you just uncomment some mirror you like in /etc/slackware/mirrors and that is it. There is no dwongrading from CUrrent to Stable btw.

    slackpkg.conf is self-explanatory. YOu may have a loot at it but afaik the default should work fine.

    Hey Benny!

    gentoo have 2.33 stable, with crypt support,

    Last time we talked about stable it was 2.32 and 2.31 for slackware and I was getting 2.33 to behave itself.

    the 2.34 is still to come with can maybe still have support for crypt ?

    $ file /lib/libcrypt-2.34.so
    /lib/libcrypt-2.34.so: ELF 64-bit LSB shared object, x86-64, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked, for GNU/Linux 3.2.0, not stripped

    That is fresh from the latest build of a soon to be 'stable' once it becomes official on August 1st or shortly after barring any major glitches. At the moment I am still using 2.33 as 'stable'. Also am upgrading to a 5.13.x kernel headers which requires a gcc patch in order to be in sync with glibc-2.34 headers. It is always something ...

    the crypt part is planned to be external not in glibc any more

    That is news to me. Also see above for confirmation of libcrypt-2.34. Also from shadow-4.8.1;

    $ ldd /bin/login
    linux-vdso.so.1 (0x00007ffcefbca000)
    libcrypt.so.1 => /lib/libcrypt.so.1 (0x00007fa5a33d8000)
    libc.so.6 => /lib/libc.so.6 (0x00007fa5a3252000)
    /lib/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 (0x00007fa5a3416000)

    This seems to confirm that it indeed works although I have yet to boot this particular build ... yet.

    hope you know why i use gentoo ?

    I have a good guess. Keeping up to date is alot of work and anything that helps is usually more than welcome.

    It already up to date. The real problem is the "Intel Corporation UHD Graphics 630 (Desktop 9 Series)" near as I can tell given that other i915 ones do give me console penguins. Thanks for the suggestion though as it is always nice to confirm everything as it should be.

    Hey Benny!

    incorrect, vesa does not enforce aspect ratio
    i had vesa on 1600x1200 monitor with 8 penguins, i still have that picture

    If you do the math 1600x1200 *IS* 4:3 aspect ratio. The above is evidence that vesa is 4:3. You might be thinking of uvesa which can do 16:9.

    vesa is what to do if others does not work

    How about if it does work but doesn't give you bootup penguins? I'd much rather have the proper aspect ratio than bootup penguins, not to mention accellerated graphics, etc. Your suggestion is for situations where there is no choice.

    take that graphic card out and return it to the store as non
    working

    It is part of the cpu. From the spec sheet https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/134898/intel-core-i5-9400-processor-9m-cache-up-to-4-10-ghz.html I cut and paste; Processor Graphics ^ Intel® UHD Graphics 630

    and the loadlin.exe existed for os/2 if i remember aswell

    No surprise there although I never did encounter it nevermind try it. The win95 one I saw in action on a cousin's computer way back in the mid to late 1990's.

    Lynx handles gopher:// links nicely. I'm not sure about nntp. Do we want that to work from a browser? When I do use nntp I use tin.

    Hey Benny!

    seamonkey is not that blotware, its came from netscape, before
    microsoft had a browser

    That was mozilla. I first saw mozilla on Solaris (X Windows) way back when in the early 1990's. Also firefox can trace it's origins to mozilla, same with netscape although I haven't seen that in ages now. Near as I can tell seamonkey and firefox are the only ones left standing from that development.

    links is not more bloted then lynx ? :)

    Yes but that also depends on how one configures links. I have a pure text version with no gpm mouse support and it comes in at;

    ----- 'stat -c "%N: %s bytes" /usr/bin/{links,lynx}' starts
    '/usr/bin/links': 1414176 bytes
    '/usr/bin/lynx': 1293016 bytes
    ----- 'stat -c "%N: %s bytes" /usr/bin/{links,lynx}' ends

    Myself I prefer to use links for actual browsing and lynx for converting html to text. I don't do much html->text conversion anymore so lynx doesn't get that much use anymore but I keep it because it is a familiar friend that goes back to my VAX/VMS days to connect to a university library's database back in the day. If I am remembering correctly that was in the late 1980's sometime, before I even saw a GUI (X Windows).

    eq where is gohher nntp now

    It has gone to ground. The last time I used gopher was with kermit sometime in the early 1990's running on a 286 off a 5.25" floppy disk. Apparently both seamonkey and firefox can do gopher as well as lynx and links. nntp isn't something I ever cared about and still don't. What for?

    Gopher just rocks.

    Such a simple protocol you can do such awesomeness with.

    By the way, I like the CGO gopher client myself.

    I also like nntp, but the Usenet has gone to hell. nntp is still very good for following mailing lists on gmane's service. Just follow your favourite mailing lists without signing up or anything, and without cluttering your mail inbox. How cool is that?

    There is Pocket Gopher for Android. It is fine but you will need to get it from F-Droid since I think it is not in Google's store.

    Me neither. As far as I can tell I only have lynx that works at the moment although I probably could write a bash script that uses netcat to create a client fidonet-ish app. There is a Net::Gopher module for perl and I've heard rumours of a python gopher module.

    i would like to do the replacement for ftp:// to gopher:// with
    it, so i can close that problem with ftp protocol

    Offhand I think ftp is the better option.

    This is your idea not mine but if I get more curious about it I might try something out that may or may not be of any interest to your goal for it. I can't see this idea catching on though beyond a server and a few clients on smartphones. Gopher might be a better option than sms messaging and the such. Is that what you're thinking?

    Hey Benny!

    maybe pygopherd cloud be extended to client

    At the moment I don't know but it seems to me that many Android apps are python based so perhaps there is something there.

    then gopher wins

    Maybe we'll see. I am still thinking about it and haven't taken any real steps in this direction.

    There might be some fun to be had. I'll first have to set up a server, probably on wireless, and see what kind of damage I can do with it before getting too serious about it all.

    Hey Benny!

    python on android ?

    According to google, a few years ago python was second only to java for creating apps for android. It was more popular than google go, which one would think would be first. Also clang/clang++ which I have working on a tablet and used it to compile binkd for android running in a termux shell, which you recommended to me for running mc on an android based smart device. As far as I am concerned termux is the best app I have seen thus far for smart devices given the native bash enviroment it offers. I did post some msgs from it not that long ago but haven't fired it up since. I am not a fan of smart devices and only have one for testing ... such as binkd for android. If the tablet still works I'll fire off a msg to you from it to this echo.

    feel free to se my gopher server

    I just did for a second time. I like the ansi cows although moose would be better especially the extra-special mythical Møøse. Anyhow lynx is the only browser I have that is gopher capable out of the box. Both firefox and seamonkey require some sort of plugin which I am not going to bother with. I dislike browsers and browsing, especially using gui ones. 99% of my browsing is done using links but lynx is okay.

    oh wifi 6 ? :)

    Yeah right. Still using 2.4GHz as it gives the best coverage (range). We're getting a few lower end N connections but most concerned are getting sub 54G speeds. To do better will require illegal hookups ... or a broadcasting license and a few million dollars for new hardware.
